Robert Lee Gear Jr.

Professional Accomplishments in the Political Arena

January 1966 precipitated formation of an Arizona Naturopathic Association committee to change the Arizona Industrial Commission's Naturopathy Fee Schedule to include the setting of fractures and the reduction of dislocations with the application and removal of plaster casting material. The committee was successful in its efforts.

November 1966 completed specialty training in non-surgical orthopedics Los Angeles College of Chiropractic.

1968 was a charter fellow of the Arizona Academy of Naturopathic General Practice

Represented the profession at the Republican Political Party Trunk and Tusk Dinners.

Represented the profession at the Green Cross for Safety Annual Conferences in Phoenix.

Helped the attitude change at the Industrial Commission regarding the usage of only one fee schedule for all physicians thereby eliminating economic discrimination.

1980 appointed to the Arizona Naturopathic Board of Examiners (NPBOMEX) by Governor Bruce Babbitt (D) and served as its vice Chairman.

1980 was appointed to be the legislative advocate of the NPBOMEX.  Was successful in steering the first meaningful bill through both the house and the senate since the inception legislation of naturopathy in 1934. It was put in the speaker of the house's desk drawer one-hour before the final vote that would have approved it for the governor to have the opportunity to sign it. Taught me the power of the allopathic (MD) lobbyist and the reality of politics.

1980 and 1981 mounted a drive to have the naturopathic medical profession be successful in its campaign to survive the original sunset review process. Hired a publicist and spent $20,000 of my own money. We were successful.

1988 and 1989 represented the naturopathic medical profession at the legislature with the successful passage of many pieces of legislation. The most prominent and long reaching were the Drug and Devices Bill and the Medical Assistant's Bill.

1966 through 1989 very active in all areas of Arizona Naturopathic Medical Association (AzNMA) as a board of directors member. Served in all offices during this tenure.

1988 and 1989 wrote and rewrote the Standards of Naturopathic Medical Practice for the AzNMA.

1989 representative to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) for the AzNMA

1989 voted Physician of the Year by the AzNMA.

1990 and 1991 was selected by U S West to represent the back of the Phoenix White Pages telephone directory. Promotion of naturopathic medicine as full service general practice of medicine was the theme of the public service message.

1992 appointed to the Naturopathic Physicians Board of Medical Examiners by Governor Symington. Served as its vice Chairman for three years and its Chairman for two years.

1997 represented NPBOMEX at the American Association of Naturopathic Medical Licensing Boards annual meeting.

Multiple years I was the presenter of the naturopathic medical professions concerns before the Industrial Commission of Arizona at its annual meeting with health care and medical providers.
